About Bristol Backyard Ultra
The Bristol Backyard Ultra takes place at Blaise Castle Estate, where runners tackle a 6.7 km trail loop repeatedly over the May Day bank holiday weekend. The course winds through woodland singletrack, open green spaces and hilly terrain dotted with rocky and rooty sections, with short climbs adding variety throughout. Runners must complete each loop within the hour and be ready at the start line when the next hour begins; those who miss the cutoff are out, and the race continues until only one runner remains.
This is a true test of endurance and mental resilience as much as physical ability. Basecamp at the start and finish provides a hub for kit, support crews and rest between loops, with toilets, parking and nearby amenities including a café. A small aid station offers water, hot drinks and snacks, though runners must develop their own fuelling and recovery approach for the long haul. Head torches are essential for night running, and electronic chip timing tracks progress throughout.
The event welcomes participants aged 20 and over. Marshals cover the first three loops, and a medical team is on site for the duration.
