About Buttermere Trail Race
Buttermere Trail Race circles two of the Lake District's most striking waters on a 20 km trail loop starting and finishing at Bridge Hotel in Buttermere village. The route stays low, hugging the shorelines of Buttermere and Crummock Water through a varied landscape of lakeshore trails, rocky paths, grassy tracks and woodland singletrack. The course is fully marked throughout, so navigation experience is not required.
The terrain is undulating, with the western shoreline of Crummock Water presenting the most technical challenge—generally wet and rough underfoot—while the latter stages offer firmer, hard-packed trails. Taking place on 21 March 2027 under UK Athletics rules, the event is open to runners aged 17 and over, with a maximum of 200 participants.
