About By Way of the Glen
By Way of the Glen is a 170 mile foot race across the Scottish Highlands, departing from Milngavie near Glasgow on 1 July 2027 and finishing at Birch Cafe in Inverness four days later. Runners tackle the West Highland Way (94 miles) followed by the Great Glen Way (72 miles), combining two of Scotland's most established long-distance routes with a total ascent of approximately 24,000 feet across trail terrain.
The West Highland Way section must be completed within 28 hours before continuing onto the Great Glen Way via a short tarmac link at Neptune Staircase. The entire course is waymarked and monitored via tracking, with checkpoints positioned throughout for support crew to meet runners. In remote sections, marshalled drop bag facilities are available. Runners must carry mandatory kit and maintain at least one runner capable of leaving the marked route if needed to seek help.
Entry is by application only and restricted to those with a proven race history of 70 miles or more. The event operates under specific rules including no walking poles, no support runners, and no bike support. Prize giving takes place on the Sunday morning in Inverness.
