About Castle to Castle Ultra - Carrickfergus
This 26 or 52-mile trail race on 20 March 2027 demands self-sufficiency and navigational confidence. Runners tackle the same three hills – Knockagh, Carnmoney Hill and Cavehill – across a mixed terrain of trails, footpaths, roads and forest paths, with views across Belfast Lough. The ultra begins and ends at Carrickfergus Castle, running to Belfast Castle and back; the marathon starts at Belfast Castle and finishes at Carrickfergus Castle. Cut-off times are 14 hours for the ultra and 7 hours for the marathon.
Participants must carry mandatory kit including a charged phone, waterproof jacket, emergency foil blanket and refillable water bottles, as there are no cup services. Competitors are fully tracked with GPS support, and water refill stops and aid stations dot the route. The ultra offers the option of dropping a bag at the turnaround point. Runners will receive GPX files before the event; the course has no additional signage or marshals, so accurate GPS navigation is essential.
