About Dartmoor's Ancient Field Boundaries
Dartmoor's Ancient Field Boundaries takes runners on a 13-mile trail run through South Dartmoor's landscape of hedges and stone walls on 30 August 2026. Starting from Newbridge Car Park in Holne, this guided four-hour route explores Bronze Age field systems, medieval boundaries and ancient tin workings as it climbs to Ryder's Hill, the highest point on South Dartmoor, before descending past recently laid hedges through Holne village. With 2,230 feet of ascent, the run follows the River Dart, visits Bench Tor and Combestone Tor, and finishes with a riverside picnic and swim in the Dart Valley.
The event combines running with interpretation of Dartmoor's field boundaries—their origins, traditional management, biodiversity, current threats and conservation. Frequent stops punctuate the route to explore these themes. Participants should be comfortable running on uneven ground, have trail running shoes, and possess the fitness to complete a half marathon in under four hours. The event is open to adults aged 18 and over.
