For runners seeking a proper backcountry challenge, the Dorset Hillfort Ultra delivers 36 miles of off-road terrain through Maiden Newton on 1 November 2026. The route climbs approximately 1,300 metres across trails, turf and tracks that are predominantly uneven and potentially muddy, with navigation support provided via GPX files, maps and turn-by-turn notes. A 10-hour cut-off applies.
Six support stations are positioned along the course, staffed by marshalls at key crossings. Water and squash are available at all controls, with cake, flapjack and sandwiches offered at various points—dietary requirements like gluten-free and vegan options can be arranged with advance notice. A doctor will be present at one of the later stations. Runners should carry an emergency snack, mobile phone, waterproof jacket, hat and personal water bottle or hydration pack. Free parking and toilets are available at the start and finish near Maiden Newton.
