About Dragon's Back Race
Strung across the spine of Wales, the Dragon's Back Race takes runners from Conwy Castle to Cardiff Castle over a six-day mountain running event in September. The 39 km route traverses a mix of terrain including grass, peat, mud, rock and river crossings, plus sections of asphalt, requiring careful navigation with a supplied map, compass or GPS device. Every participant carries a GPS tracker for safety monitoring throughout the event.
Runners are based at mobile camps in communal tents, with catering provided for breakfast and dinner following a meat and fish free menu. Participants must carry their own provisions for daytime consumption on the course, with resupply opportunities and drinking water available at mid-way support points each day. Mandatory kit includes specialist mountain clothing, a survival bag and headlamp, with a course closure time each evening at 22:00.
