About Granite Peaks Races
Tollymore Forest Park in County Down hosts this challenging mountain running event on 29 August 2026. The Granite Peaks 25k covers 25.10 km with 1,359 m of elevation gain, traversing high terrain across the Mourne Mountains. Starting and finishing at Tollymore National Outdoor Centre, the route leaves the forest park and climbs toward Happy Valley before crossing the Mourne Wall between Meelmore and Meelbeg. Runners then navigate anti-clockwise along the wall, descend to Ben Crom Dam, cross it, and traverse several peaks including Slievelamaghan, Cove and Beg mountains before descending via the Brandy Pad and Hare's Gap, returning down Trassey Track to finish.
Rated as an extreme event with only major junctions marked, this race requires navigation skills and fitness for serious mountain terrain. Runners must carry mandatory Level C kit including waterproof jacket with integrated hood, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, charged mobile phone, foil blanket or bivvy bag, waterproof leg cover, water capacity of at least 500 mL, emergency food, and map and compass. GPS devices are permitted. The event is for seniors only, with random kit checks conducted on race day. Prizegiving takes place at Tollymore National Outdoor Centre.
