About Heart of Granite
A 32 km circular mountain race through the Galloway hills, Heart of Granite takes runners on a high-altitude trail loop starting and finishing at Caldons old campsite in Glen Trool, Newton Stewart. The route encompasses 1850 m of ascent across named features including Curleywee, the Rig of Jarkness and the Murder Hole, with summits such as Craiglee and Merrick. Checkpoints on the Southern Upland Way provide food, water and support throughout the course.
The race is marshalled by Galloway Mountain Rescue, who staff checkpoints, provide first aid cover and offer hot soup and cakes at the finish. Held under Scottish Hill Runners permit and rules, the event takes place on 3 April 2027. Participants must be at least 18 years old with fell running experience and navigation skills, as winter conditions are possible. Mandatory kit includes map, compass, whistle, waterproof clothing with taped seams, head torch, hat and gloves.
