About Junior & Mini Great North Run
Two running distances give children and young people their own slice of the Great North Run experience on 12 September 2026 in Newcastle. The Mini event covers 1.2km for ages 3–8 (with an accompanying adult), while the Junior challenge spans 4km for ages 9–16, who can run independently or with adult support. A separate 50m course is also available for younger children with additional support needs.
The road route uses closed roads to keep runners safe. Children receive a t-shirt and finisher's medal, with on-course music, entertainment, and photo opportunities throughout. The finish line experience is designed to celebrate every participant, backed by local supporters offering encouragement along the way. An event village follows the race, featuring exhibitors and refreshments.
