About Lake District Mountain Trial
Runners seeking a serious mountain navigation challenge will find it on the Lake District Mountain Trial. Held annually in mid-September, this fell running classic tests route choice, navigational skill and stamina across rough, mountainous terrain. The 2026 edition takes place on 13 September based at George Starkey Hut in Glenridding.
Three courses cater to different abilities: the 29 km and 21 km options are severe tests requiring fell-running experience, while the 15 km course suits novices over 18 and veterans over 60. Competitors navigate using pre-marked waterproof maps. Electronic punching via SportIdent system provides on-the-spot results. The event runs under Fell Runners Association rules and is open to solo runners aged 18 and over, with under-14s able to compete as part of a pair on the Short course if accompanied by a runner aged at least 21.
