About Machlud Sunset Trail Race
Machlud takes runners across the Vale of Clwyd and up through the Clwydian Hills to Moel Famau's summit on 12 September 2026. This 13.1-mile trail half marathon, starting and finishing at Mold village school, covers good quality tracks and paths including sections of Offa's Dyke footpath, with approximately 750 metres of ascent concentrated in the final 10 kilometres. Staggered starts are timed so that many participants reach the high-level terrain around sunset.
The route passes through several checkpoint locations including Moel Arthur, Llangynhafal and Bwlch Penbarras, with timing checkpoints throughout. Runners must carry mandatory kit including a charged headtorch, whistle, refillable drinks bottle, foil bivvy bag and fell or trail running shoes. The event accepts canicross entries, though dogs must be on leads in the start and finish areas and owners should consider route suitability given the several stiles along the way. Post-race facilities include hot soup or stew with bread, with vegan and gluten-free options available.
