About Medieval Backyard Ultra
The Medieval Backyard Ultra takes place at Cosmeston Lakes in Penarth, where runners tackle a 7 km trail loop repeatedly from Saturday 24 April through the following days. This is an elimination format: each hour on the hour, competitors must complete the circuit in under 60 minutes. Those who finish within the time move forward to the next lap; anyone who misses the start or fails to complete the distance is withdrawn. The runner who finishes one more lap than everyone else wins.
The 7 km loop follows mixed trail paths with approximately 171 feet of elevation gain per lap. Event headquarters at the Medieval Village provides facilities including toilets, charging points, and an indoor shelter. Limited camping is available at the start and finish area for those with tents. Runners have any leftover time each hour to recover and refuel, with hot and cold water supplied by the organisers.
Registration opens on Friday 23 April, with the race beginning the following day. The event includes chip timing, a fully marked route, first aid and marshal support, and finisher medals and commemorative wooden beakers.
