About Midwinter Mortimer Trail
Taking place on Boxing Day 2026, the Midwinter Mortimer Trail follows the historic Mortimer Trail through the borderland between England and Wales. The route connects Ludlow in Shropshire with Kington in Herefordshire, passing through terrain dominated by forests, limestone tops and open hillsides interspersed with pastures across the Marches.
Two distances are available: a 30-mile ultra starting from Ludlow Castle, and a 12.5-mile shorter option beginning at the Riverside Inn in Aymestrey, which covers the final half of the longer route. Both routes combine trail, forest and road running across ridges, hills and valleys. The area's medieval heritage is reflected in the trail's name, drawn from the Mortimer family who held sway over these lands centuries ago.
