In late October, the Monsal Trail Half Marathon & 10K Autumn Sunday takes runners through one of Derbyshire's most distinctive landscapes. The route follows a converted railway line between Bakewell Station and Miller's Dale, passing through four tunnels and crossing the Monsal Viaduct. The half marathon covers 13.1 miles while the 10K turns around at the 5km mark inside the first tunnel. Both distances follow a flat-ish, traffic-free path made up of tarmac and hard track.
The trail is shared with walkers, cyclists, horse riders and dogs, so runners are asked to keep left and take care on narrower sections. Set within the surrounding countryside, the half marathon route suits both experienced runners and those new to the distance, while the 10K offers a shorter alternative on the same scenic path.
