About Montane Dragon's Back Race
The Dragon's Back Race is an established multi-stage ultra running event that takes runners across Wales from Conwy Castle to Cardiff Castle each September. The 2026 edition runs from 7 to 12 September as a six-day trail running challenge, with the full route tracing the Dragon's Back of Wales between the two castles.
Runners can choose their format. The Full Dragon covers the complete route, while Dragon's Fire (new for 2026) condenses the more demanding sections into two days starting at Conwy Castle. Dragon's Tail also spans two days but focuses on the final stages, including Bannau Brycheiniog and the finish at Cardiff Castle. The Hatchling format offers flexibility, allowing participants to tackle either the first or second half of the route each day.
