About Montane Lakeland 50 & 100

These linked ultra trail races reward navigational skill and fell running experience across the Lake District's lesser-known terrain. The 100 mile event, a 40-hour continuous loop starting and finishing at Coniston, encompasses around 6300 metres of ascent through Dunnerdale, Eskdale, Wasdale, Buttermere and beyond, threading public bridleways and footpaths rather than the region's most famous summits. The 50 mile race follows the second half of the 100 mile route, covering roughly 3000 metres of ascent from Dalemain Estate on Ullswater's northern shore through Haweswater, Kentmere and Langdale, with a 24 hour time limit.

Both courses demand solid navigation ability and prior experience of fell running or walking on technical ground. Rugged terrain, significant climbs and descents, and stretches of challenging navigation characterise the routes. Compulsory checkpoints staffed with food and drink support competitors throughout: 14 on the 100 mile and 6 on the 50 mile race. The 50 mile event runs from 23 to 25 July 2027, with coach transfers provided to the start while participants base themselves at Coniston.
