About MTC Afanc
A 40-mile trail ultra taking place across the Welsh landscape, the MTC Afanc follows National Cycle Route 8 from Glasbury to Merthyr Tydfil on 8 July 2028. The single-day event forms part of the six-day MTC CYMRUN end-to-end challenge, though runners can enter the Afanc as a standalone race. The field is capped at 40 competitors, with places allocated to both independent entrants and those taking on the longer CYMRUN challenge.
The route is accurately measured at 39.7 miles and runners navigate using maps and GPX files provided in advance. Organisers enforce preset cut-off points based on a minimum pace of 4.0 miles per hour. Competitors must be self-sufficient with mandatory kit including a backpack, head torch, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone and first aid kit, though organisers supply individual tracking devices with SOS functions and checkpoint support with food and drink. All finishers receive a medal, with male and female champions awarded trophies.
