About Mynyddoedd Du/Black Mountains Fell Race
Fell runners seeking a serious mountain challenge in Wales should consider this long-established race across the Black Mountains. The Mynyddoedd Du/Black Mountains Fell Race takes place on 11 September 2027, covering 27 km with 1586 m of ascent entirely within the Black Mountains using open access land and public or permissive rights of way. The event is organised on a grass-roots basis by Mynydd Du in association with the WFRA and has run for over 30 years.
The course is unmarked and navigational; runners must visit five checkpoints in order and check in with marshals, with a sweeper following the last competitor and cut-offs enforced at certain points. Competitors must be over 18 and fully self-sufficient, carrying waterproof and windproof clothing, hat, gloves, compass, whistle, map and kit bag. Entry is by advance online registration, and a compulsory race briefing takes place before the start. Any surplus from the event supports local Mountain Rescue.
