About NAV4 Lakes Mountain 40
The Lakes Mountain 40 takes runners across approximately 40 miles of unmarked mountain trail in the Lake District, with around 10,000 feet of ascent and descent. The route includes the summits of Helvellyn and High Street, traversing a mix of Lakeland mountain paths, open access land and public rights of way. Competitors should have basic mountain navigation skills; GPS devices are permitted alongside map and compass.
Three roadside checkpoints provide food and drink during the race, with a return feed of "Soup Plus" at the finish. The event is based at Askham Community Centre, where registration takes place and where the course begins and ends. Parking is available onsite and adjacent, with campervan spaces provided. Penrith rail station is around five miles away. Floor space at the centre can be booked for overnight accommodation before the event.
Given the exposed, high mountain terrain, runners should wear full winter mountain running kit including waterproof jacket and trousers, thermal layers, insulating jacket, warm hat, gloves and head torch. Entry is limited to a maximum of 150 participants.
