About Original Mountain Marathon
Galloway Forest Park's remote terrain forms the backdrop for the Original Mountain Marathon, a two-day navigation challenge taking place on 24 October 2026 near Newton Stewart in Dumfries and Galloway. Competitors tackle courses ranging from approximately 40K to 100K depending on their choice of route, with participants camping overnight between stages.
The event offers six course options: Elite, A and B follow linear routes where checkpoints must be visited in order, while Long Score, Medium Score and Short Score allow competitors to collect points from self-selected checkpoints within a fixed timeframe. Navigation, route choice and endurance form the core of the challenge, and participants must be entirely self-sufficient, carrying all mandatory equipment and supplies needed for the overnight camp in the mountains.
