About Portobello Beach Race
A 4-mile trail race on sand makes for an unusual running challenge. The Portobello Beach Race takes place on 30 August 2026 along Edinburgh's shoreline, with the course timed to coincide with low tide. Runners start below Towerbank Primary School, head east to the pumping station at Joppa, then return westward past the Cat and Dog Home before finishing back at the start. The sandy terrain and coastal conditions mean participants may encounter groynes to navigate or wet feet as the tide shifts.
Licensed by Scottish Athletics, the race is limited to 350 runners aged 16 and over. Prizes are available in open male and female categories alongside age-based veteran divisions. Registration takes place at Powerleague Portobello on Westbank Street, where facilities including toilets and a bag-drop service are available. The finish area provides water and refreshments, with cafes nearby on the promenade.
