About Race Across Scotland
Portpatrick's rugged coastline marks the starting point for this 215-mile coast-to-coast ultramarathon across Scotland. Runners follow the Southern Upland Way trail from Portpatrick Harbour in Dumfries and Galloway eastward to Cockburnspath, traversing 7,218 metres of ascent over five days. The race takes place from 8 to 12 August 2026, with an overall time limit of 100 hours.
The route features 12 checkpoints offering water and refreshments, with some providing hot food in village halls. Between checkpoints, runners must be self-sufficient and navigate using mandatory equipment including a hardcopy map, compass and headtorch. Some sections pass remote bothies with no facilities. Entry is by application only, with places limited to 250. Participants must be at least 20 years old and demonstrate prior ultrarunning experience and basic navigation ability. Support crews are permitted from Checkpoint 3 onwards, subject to restrictions.
