About Spire Ultra
A 33-mile trail ultramarathon, the Spire Ultra takes runners on a circuit through North East Derbyshire on 1 May 2027. Now in its ninth year, the event follows much of the Chesterfield Round Walk, a waymarked route encircling the town famous for its Crooked Spire. The course traverses high moorland, ancient woodland, reservoirs, rolling farmland and restored former mining areas, offering varied terrain across the distance.
The route is largely unmarked, though some navigation sections are marked and Chesterfield Round Walk waymarks remain along the way. Route notes and GPX files are available, and runners may wish to bring a paper map. A 9-hour time limit applies, with checkpoints positioned at 6, 10.5, 15, 19, 22 and 27 miles. Water is available at every checkpoint, while food is provided at the 10.5, 15 and 27-mile marks. Registration takes place at North Wingfield Community Resource Centre, where free car parking is available. Every finisher receives a memento, and medic cover is in place throughout the event.
