About The Big Pilgrimage
The Big Pilgrimage takes runners along The Old Way, a historic pilgrim route identified on the Gough Map around 1360, tracing coastal and countryside trails through Hampshire. Starting from Mayflower Park in Southampton on 22 August 2027, participants choose between a 15-mile or 26-mile trail course that winds past pilgrimage landmarks including Netley Castle, Netley Abbey, The Chapel at Royal Victoria Country Park, and Titchfield Abbey. The route crosses the Hamble River by boat and finishes at different locations depending on distance.
As runners progress, they collect stickers at each historic site to build a collectable race bib, and receive a bag of sweets along the way. The event requires participants to carry at least 500ml of fluid and wear weather-appropriate clothing. A bag drop service transports kit between start and finish, and GPX files are available to download for route planning. Finishers have the option to have a tree planted in their name rather than receive a traditional medal.
