About The Dark Downs
The Dark Downs suits runners and walkers comfortable with night-time racing on rolling terrain. This 50 km trail race takes place on the South Downs near Lewes, starting at dusk on 3 October 2026 and continuing into darkness with a 12-hour time limit. The course follows runnable trails across generally untechnical ground, marked with reflective signage and supported by marshals stationed at regular intervals.
The event forms part of the South Downs Triple Crown series, which allows participants to complete any three 50k races from a selection of five to earn the crown. Based at Plumpton Racecourse, the race takes advantage of the South Downs' Dark Sky Reserve status, awarded in 2016 for exceptional starry skies.
