Trail running in the Simonside Hills takes on a different character after dark. The Duergar Nightcrawler is a 10 mile night trail run based near Rothbury in Northumberland, named after the mythical dwarfs said to haunt these hills. The single loop course climbs steeply to Simonside Crag in its first half before descending back toward Rothbury, covering a mix of gravel paths, trail and rocky sections. Navigation is supported by directional arrows and reflective flags, with a safety team positioned throughout the hills. One water station serves runners at the 3 and 8 mile marks.

This February event forms part of the Shadowlands Winter Trail Series, with results contributing to an overall series standing. Runners must carry mandatory kit including a head torch, trail shoes, mobile phone, emergency foil space blanket, whistle and waterproof clothing. Registration takes place at Newcastle House Hotel in Rothbury, where participants collect their race numbers. There are no cut-off times, and all finishers receive hot chocolate or non-alcoholic mulled wine. Age category prizes run from V40 to V70.
