About The MTC Hafren Ultra
The MTC Hafren Ultra takes runners along the River Severn, from its source high on Plynlimon down through mid-Wales. This 27-mile trail ultramarathon on 16 February 2028 begins with a near four-mile mountain trek to Rhyd-y-benwch on Plynlimon, then follows the Severn path to finish at the Mid Wales Arts Centre in Caersws. The route encompasses 872 metres of ascent and 1,069 metres of descent.
Two checkpoint stations on course provide food and drink, with vegan and gluten-free options available for those who arrange them at registration. Runners must bring their own reusable cup. Navigation support is provided via GPX and map files, though competitors are advised to carry an Ordnance Survey Map 150 or equivalent, compass or GPS device, and familiarise themselves with the route beforehand, as the Severn Path can be overgrown and markings are not guaranteed. A minimum average speed of 4.0 miles per hour applies throughout the race.
Mandatory kit includes a backpack, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone and basic first aid kit. Competitors must arrange their own transport to the start and from the finish. All finishers receive a bespoke medal and MTC head visor.
