About Thetford Back Yard Ultra
Thetford Back Yard Ultra takes the distinctive Backyard format to High Lodge in Thetford Forest for a late summer challenge on 11 September 2027. Participants run successive 7 km loops through forest, with each loop needing to be completed within one hour to remain in the race. The winner is the last person still able to finish a full loop when all others have stopped.
The 7 km course is wide and mostly flat, following gravel and grass paths with one small hill, fully signed and firm underfoot. An aid station at the start/finish offers water and basic snacks. Free camping is available for runners and crews across two adjacent areas, though space is limited and small tents or gazebos are preferred. A supervised cooking area is provided, and a limited charging station is available for runners' devices.
Alongside the main event, 6 hour and 12 hour timed options run using the same format and setup, with participants automatically recorded as DNF when their chosen time limit ends. The 12 hour option is open to adults; the 6 hour option accepts runners from age 12 with a parent or guardian present. Headtorches are required after dark.
