About Trails & Tarmac Backyard Ultra
Taking place on 7 November 2026, the Trails & Tarmac Backyard Ultra is a 12-hour endurance event held at a cricket pitch near Crickhowell in the Black Mountains. Runners tackle a 4.2-mile loop each hour in the traditional backyard ultra format, split equally between trail and tarmac surfaces. The terrain is relatively flat with one gradual climb and a short steep section, and each loop must be completed within the hour to remain in the race.
For the first 11 hours, runners follow standard backyard ultra rules: no personal aid on course and no trekking poles or artificial aids. The final 12th yard differs from this format, run as a race to determine the winner on fastest time. Event headquarters provides hot and cold food, medics, showers and toilets. All participants who complete at least one loop receive a medal, with an additional special medal for those reaching the 32-mile ultra distance.
