About Viking Way Ultra
The Viking Way Ultra demands serious endurance experience and self-reliance. This 147-mile non-stop ultra follows the Viking Way trail from Barton-upon-Humber in North Lincolnshire to Oakham near Rutland Water, taking runners through the Lincolnshire Wolds with 2,295 metres of ascent to overcome. The marked route must be completed within 40 hours, with mandatory cut-off points at 50 and 100 miles.
The event is deliberately stripped back. Runners receive basic food at two major checkpoints and snacks, gels and drinks at around eight further checkpoints spaced roughly 15–18 miles apart. Navigation relies entirely on Viking Way route markers; GPS devices are not permitted. Solo running is required—no crews, pacers or support allowed—and a compulsory personal kit must be carried throughout. Entries are capped at 40 and reserved for those with proven ultra-running credentials, specifically a prior non-stop 100-mile finish.
Taking place on 6 February 2027, the Viking Way Ultra suits experienced runners seeking a raw and unmediated challenge across a considerable distance and landscape. Finishers receive a medal and t-shirt.
