About Walter Raleigh Round Half/Third Marathon
A trail run through East Devon countryside, the Walter Raleigh Round takes runners across quiet back lanes, unsurfaced county roads and little-known footpaths through the landscape that shaped the life of the historical figure it's named after. The route sweeps through the Otter valley and along the Jurassic Coast, taking in High Peak and a dismantled railway before returning to the coastal town of Budleigh Salterton.
Two distances are available. The half marathon covers 13.1 miles on the full circuit, while the third marathon follows the same opening section through to the river Otter before avoiding the toughest ascents and the coastal stretch, running instead along the riverbank for a total of 8.5 miles. Both have a maximum time limit of five hours and welcome runners and walkers alike.
The event takes place on 9 January 2027, based at Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club, which offers car parking, hot showers, a bar and cafe. All finishers receive a solid oak coaster. 16th century fancy dress is optional but encouraged.
