About Way of the Dead (a Dartmoor Traverse East to West

The Way of the Dead traverses Dartmoor from east to west over 50 km of trail terrain, starting at Trenchford Reservoir near Exeter and finishing on the edges of Tavistock. The route climbs 1,327 metres and takes in landmarks including Bowerman's Nose, Grimspound, Bellever plantation and Postbridge, with the halfway point marked at Powdermills before heading towards Stephen's Grave and Peter Tavy on the final approach.

Participants may enter as individuals or in pairs, with pairs competing for category prizes. Navigation skills are recommended as sections of the route are self-navigated and unsigned in places. The organisers provide GPX files and live GPS tracking throughout the event. Three checkpoints serve as feed stations, and bag drop facilities are available to the finish or final station at Merrivale. The event operates a 10-hour cut-off time.
