About Winter on the Downs

Winter on the Downs takes runners across the South Downs' trail network in early December, when unpredictable weather can test resolve. The event comprises three single-loop ultramarathon courses starting and finishing near Eastbourne, with the event base at East Dean Village Hall. Each route crosses grass trails, farm tracks and woodland paths, taking in sections along the South Downs and coastal terrain with extensive views throughout. The landscape drains reasonably well despite variable winter conditions, though runners should expect potentially wet and muddy stretches alongside firmer ground.

All three distances form part of the South Downs Triple Crown, a challenge requiring participants to complete three ultra races within a calendar year. The trails traverse East and West Sussex, beginning with a crossing of the Seven Sisters before heading inland toward Plumpton.
