About Winter Solstice Challenge
The Winter Solstice Challenge invites runners to complete laps around Abberton Reservoir near Colchester on 20 December 2026. Each circuit covers just over 5 km on off-road paths that loop from the Visitors Centre; the terrain may be muddy in places. Participants choose their own challenge by running as many laps as they wish during the six-hour window, meaning distances range from a single 5 km lap upwards.
A feed station operates at the Visitors Centre, passed on every lap and stocked throughout the event. The Visitors Centre remains open in the evening, allowing spectators to watch and purchase refreshments on site. The event is held in association with Essex Wildlife Trust, which receives a donation from proceeds. Places are limited to 75.
